Sharing the road with pedestrians, other riders and automobiles is an absolute necessity. It’s all a question of respect. It does not make much sense to complain about how automobile drivers do not respect bikers, if riders do not do their share to respect each and every road user they encounter.
Be predictable. Be visible.
- When riding a bike, it is of the utmost importance to warn others before stopping, passing or turning. Do you know the signals ? Signal with your left arm when you want to stop or turn left, and use your right arm to turn right.
- Do not pass other riders on the right side ! Always use the left !
- If you are riding on a bike path shared with pedestrians, you should adapt your speed to that of the slowest, i.e. the pedestrians. Put yourself in their shoes and slow down a bit…
- It is obligatory to stop at red traffic lights ! A red light means everyone must come to a halt.
- Ride on the right with traffic.
- Always use bike paths and lanes whenever available, as stated in the Road Safety Code.
- The Road Safety Code states that bicycles must be equipped with the following reflectors : white at the front, red at the back, yellow on each side of the front wheel, red on each side of the back wheel, and yellow on each side of both pedals (front and back).
- If you are riding at night, your bicycle should be equipped with appropriate lighting, i.e. a white light at the front and a red light at the back. It is mandatory !
- When choosing a helmet, make sure it is well adjusted and snug. Adjust the strap under the chin correctly and do not forget to readjust it frequently.
- Bike bells are recommended. This charming little piece of equipment is very useful and will put smiles on virtually everyone you will come across. It is a gadget you can’t do without !
